How is this done with or without a disc?

HP's usually come with at least 2 discs have you got them?

No disc = no restore unless you have a True Image backup.

This depends on what came with the machine.

Some shipped with windows OEM disks. If you have one, you must boot the computer from the cd drive with the disk in the drive. Just follow the prompts. You should then have a separate disk with all the drivers to install.

If your computer came without disks, you should have had the opportunity to make the disks yourself. If this is the case, have you? If you have, you just insert disk no1 as the computer boots and follow the prompts. You should burned more than one disk.

You may have a program in start > all programs > system recovery > pc recovery. Setting this program going will revert the computer back to factory settings.

and finally you may have an option, as the computer starts, to press a F key to start the recovery process. Sometimes it's F11.

The problem with HP/Compaq is that they keep changing the settings for this;-)

My partner has an HP Compaq laptop. It came with two disks, one for the OS and one for drivers and additional software. When using the second disk you can choose what you want to install.

gezza1971,

a friend has an HP Compaq, and it has a program, in the start-all programs menu, where it has a setting to burn, restore discs.
