How to re-activate Windows XP

Hi I installed Windows XP two days ago and now have to re-install because of HDD problem. Now in Microsoft's wisdom, the automated voice won't let me re-activate (thinks it is pirated) and tells me to go Microsoft.com/genuine where I can't get anything connected with re-activation but I could buy a new copy of Windows7. Ha Ha ha. Customer support takes me in a non-person loop so I can't resolve my problem. Anyone got a suggestion of how I can speak to someone to rectify this. My copy is genuine. Thanks.

AFAIK if you don't press any buttons (menu) and don't do any verbal (silence from you) you get to talk to a person.

...you can break your vow of silence then. lol

I did eventually manage to get through to a very helpful and chatty guy in India who resolved the issue for me. Appreciate your help.
