"How much" RAM Can i have with WinXP 32?

Hello,

I have Windows XP 32 and Vista (64) on my PC. I am opting to use Windows XP as my main OS. (too many driver issues with x64 vista)

I was wondering though, how much RAM I can put in this system that can be seen/utilized? I have TWO Gigs of RAM - "Tracer Balistics" (1 gig each 1066), and have heard that I will only see 2.5 Gigs if I upgrade to FOUR gigs.

I hear This is because I have TWO GTX8800 GFX cards in SLI, both using 768 MB a piece, thus a total of 1536 megs. And Windows XP will use this RAM on my cards from the system ram!. is this true, as £60+ for the extra two gigs is a lot for just a 512 meg gain. Or perhaps if i put 3 GIG in It may work differntly, since 1536 megs can't be taken from "one" gig.

TIA for replies

Check your MOBO specs as to the max it can handle.

Hi,

It doesn't say anything about my GFX card (MOBO is an ASUS Striker II formula 1333), was just wondering how much memory my GFX cards "eat"away.

Thanks.

32bit will not recognise 4gigs, stops short at 3.5...

the 768Mbs of memory each card carries is what is used first, it is not drawn from your system memory.

The only issue you could have is power distribution, the size of PSU will greatly effect the performance of your PC...

I had 4GB RAM and 2 Radeon cards each with 512MB and XP could only 'see' 2.8GB. Based on that, 2.5GB for your system seems about right.

Thanks all,

I suppose if Ram comes down in price, 512 megs won't be too bad a ain - i guess.

Cheers
