You will have been given the option to make recovery discs when you first booted the laptop.

Did you make a backup dvd when you got the laptop?

  Modac 23:12 27 Feb 2009

Unfortunately no!!!

If you didn't avail yourself of that option, you will have to contact Acer. They will send you the necessary discs, but there will be a charge.

...unless it's under warranty.

Unfortunately, warranty has just elapsed, mid January

You don't say how much your old hard drive is defective by saying it's crashed. Does it work if you connect it to another PC as a slave hard drive? If you can and you are able to view the files, then you could try imaging the defective hard drive to your new hard drive. You would need to use an Imaging software such as Acronis True Image. If you manage to do this then before you install the new hard drive into your laptop, make sure the partition that contains the backup of your Vista Installation is set as Active by using the Disk Management in Administrative tools. Then unplug the hard drive from your host PC and insert into your laptop and boot your laptop with the new hard drive installed and it should reboot into the recovery partition, and want to install Vista again.

Can you advise on how to connect it to another PC? It's a 2.5" laptop HDD. At the moment, when in the laptop, the laptop boots up to the point of showing acer's logo, changes to a blank screen, then the HDD gives a continual clicking sound.

A IDE 2.5" laptop hard drive can be connected to a Desktop PC IDE connection by using a 2.5" to 3.5 " HARD DISK DRIVE ADAPTOR CONVERTER.

If you google 2.5 to 3.5 adapter then you'll find several places selling them...including Fleabay. You then connect the 3.5 end to an available IDE cable in your desktop PC.

The adapters cost about £3
