How important is the "Type" of Motherboard?

Having just bought a new PC from CCL, I opened it to install more RAM only to find that there is no additional slots. The board is very small and the cost is only £29. Sorry if this sounds a dumb question but does the cost of Motherboard reflect its ability, or just it's expandability, ie more spare slots etc. I am NOT using it for gaming, but do lots of photography which involves processing large RAW files.

Thanks

Ian

Of "you get what you pay for. For intense graphics applications you need a minimum 2gb of memory, and a motherboard that will support a fast cpu, and a decent (preferably pci-express) graphics card 29 quid is a budget price for a mobo.

The expandability is affected mainly by the board format. Your very small motherboard is probably micro ATX (mATX). This format is perfectly adequate for most people who don't want to tinker with the insides of their computers. They have onboard graphics and sound and so don't need many spare slots. Full size ATX motherboards, on the other hand, often have 5 PCI slots in addition to one or more PCIe (or formerly AGP) slots for a more powerful graphics card. If you want to use a full size ATX motherboard, you will also need a larger case, and possibly a more powerful PSU. The price of your motherboard (£29) is fairly typical for a basic setup. For more money you can get a motherboard with more features as well as one using a more recent chipset to support the latest processors. Have a look at what is available here click here.

Is this in conjuction with this thread? click here

As to te size of the motherboard over the price, then no. You can buy cheap motherboards with 4 ram slots and you can buy very expensive motherboards with just 2 slots.

You have to do your homework and as mentioned in the other thread, if you had confered with the crucial scanner, it would have told you that you just have two ram slots. You could have then re-evaluated the situation and dicided what to do.

Of course the simplest and most common sensed thing to do is to take the sides off the computer and check that you have spare slots.
