  jon_hoggy 09:43 28 Jul 2007

Hello, computer gormless idiot alert.
I have a pc which currently uses a USB modem for broadband. My mate gave me a 'Mentor' ADSL router as i want to make a couple of connections (such as Xbox Live). I can't find any instructions how to install it or what settings to change. I wish i knew what i was doing. Any guidance appreciated folks, thanks.

If a BT line, you need an ADSL modem router not modem and router.

OMG i think im going to cry, i might just stick with the modem, it all sounds so complicated and i know i'll end up tearing my hair out and doing several system restores. Its a Mentor MR4C/UK according the the label on the back. Is there not an idiots guide ? Thanks for the info so far, but i cant fathom it out yet... :-(

Dont be scared, its how we all learn.

If you buy an ADSL modem router if will have the ethernet ports availble for your xbox.

I absolutely agree, but without a simple guide or numbered instructions i'll make a complete hash of it . Now i wish i'd left it as it was as the pc isn't the same since my mate tried (the router was picking up the broadband, but the pc wouldnt take it from the router).

You need to do the following not to sure if you friend also give you a filter if not need to buy one also

If you have any Phone extensions, Fax Machine, Answering Machine, etc, an ADSL filter must be installed on each wall jack

Do not power on the ASDL Modem/Router

Remove Telephone from wall jack if install

Plug-in the 2-way filter that came with Modem/Router

Connect Telephone Cable to the ASDL/DSL Socket on Filter and to the ASDL socket on the Router

Do Not Plug The Phone Line Cable Into The Socket Mark Phone

If you had a Telephone connected to the wall jack before, plug the phone into the socket on the filter mark Phone

If you have any Phone extensions, Fax Machine, Answering Machine, etc, an ADSL filter must be installed on each wall jack

Connect a second Ethernet cable from Port 1 on the Router to the LAN socket on your Computer

Power up the computer only and check the following
