"I suppose I can't open a floppy off my old system because of difference ie done on windows 98."

Floppy disk formats (on PCs) are universal - they should work on any system.

What you may get is an incompatability from one drive to another at times, due to slight misalignments in drives - shouldn't happen, but does, infrequently.

My old PC had W 95. I bought a new PC in January this year, which has W XP Home. I have no problems using disks which I used on W 95.

files can be saved in w98 with some sort of compression that xp cant read - I know. my niece brought some important homework over to print as her printer was down. xp could'nt read it.

You've misdiagnosed the problem - it's nothing to do with operating systems.

win XP won't format the old 720kb floppies for some reason. theres simply no optrion to select to format a 720kb. so if its that your formatting, it ain't gonna happen.
