How to fix a hardware conflict

My system suffers from intermittent freezing which can be rescued by looking at the files on that machine from my laptop (connceted on wireless network).
I reckon there is a conflict with the sound card since it doesn't happen if I disable it. I've tried changing sound card, changed from win ME to XP pro, new network card - none have solved problem. Is there a solution to this other than getting a whole new machine?

ajw36, if the sound card is pci and not integrated you may be able to resolve the conflict simply by plugging it into a different slot.

tried that though before I bought a new sound card
