How do you measure your broadband download data

How do you measure your broadband download data every month to see how close you are to the limit the ISP's put in your contract. Also how do you check the speed?
My friend has just got broadband but I haven't a clue what package to go for when I get rid of dial up. He can't advise me how much he uses as he doesn't know how to check.
Thanks :)

I use Tautology's bandwidth meter from click here to message how much data has been passed up and down. It totals by day/month and totals.

As for a spped test there are loads, click here is a popular one.

Your ISP will send an email when/if you get near the cap. It will then explain what happens if you go over.
