how do you make head or tail of start up lists??

Booting up your pc can take ages. I have Norton 2004 and that seems to make things take even longer.

If I use Msconfig to see the start up list there's all sorts of things on the list, but I r3eally don't know what does what. In an effort not to mess things up completely, is there an easy way to understand what on the list does what.

I could turn them off 1 by one and see what happens, but I may turn off something I live to regret. Also having done that before on a couple of things sometimes nothing seems to change.. leading me to think well was that good or bad.

Any advice on how to understand the list properly and what is unncessary on my load up??
