How do we stop Chkdsk from running?

  tristar 07:55 26 Oct 2008

Couple of days back my son decided to check his computer(XP Home) by running Chkdsk. Now whenever he fires up his computer he gets message 'press a key before 'x' seconds to stop Chkdsk from running.'
He is not aware of choosing the program to run on every start up and would like to stop it from doing so.
Is there some way he can stop this? We assume it's somehow connected to the 'startup' menu, but don't know which one to untick.

Just had a call from my son, he cured it by using system restore.

This is sometimes caused by a failing Hard Drive.

It would appear that your son has, inadvertently, set ChkDsk to run automatically.

This is achieved by right clicking on the hard drive from My Computer>Explore>C (or whatever hard drive letter is in use)>Properties>Tools tag>Check Now>Scanning menu panel.

If one (or both if necessary) boxes are unchecked, this will stop ChkDsk running automatically, rather than just after a Reboot.

Thank you, I'll pass this on.

>>C (or whatever hard drive letter is in use)>Properties>...>>

Should read Highlight before >Properties.
