How to do a voice recording?

Can you guys help me please? My son needs to do a voice recording for a practise GSCE English, on computer. What is the best way to record onto my computer. I have a mic and am using windows XP with microsoft office 2003. Hope you can help me. Yours with thanks in advance as usual, oh don't forget I need it in easy speak not techy speak Thanks gang

You don't need any extra software to make a simple recording.

Start - Programs - Accessories - Entertainment - Sound Recorder

will do it.

Connect the mic - click the red button - and talk.

The problem with the built in sound recorder is that it's limited to 60 second clips. Use the setup instructions posted above and then record with Audacity or RecordPad as posted.

Once again I have to thank you guys- life savers! Used the Audacity programme eventually, suggested by Technotiger but thanks to you all you are really helpful.:) :) :) :)
