how do i start up in ms dos with out going through the start shut down phase the reason is my stupid computer wont shut down and im going to format the thing is the phrase in dos c:\ format u? thanks in advance
Windows will not let you format the partition containing windows, you will need to start in true dos.
to format follow this
1. download a windows98SE startup disk from click here , double click the file you have downloaded (you will need a floppy disk in the drive at this point)
2. set your pc to boot floppy first (you need to go into the bios and change it if it isnt already set) then put the floppy disk in, restart your pc and choose "start the computer without cdrom support", when the computer has finished booting into dos, type
press enter and accept warning. once finished, remove the floppy disk, restart your pc.
3. set the boot sequence back to boot cd first if thats what it was before or leave as it is, your choice
if you are installing win98, restart with the floppy in the drive, choose start with cdrom support this time, once the computer has finished loading, insert the win 98 cdrom, type E: + press enter (assuming E is your cd rom drive, if not then substitute the cdrom drive letter) then type setup + press enter then follow onscreen instructions.
if installing winxp,
set the pc to boot from cdrom first, insert the winxp cd and restart your pc. setup will start automatically.
You can create a boot disc while the Comp is working Control Panel Add Remove put clean floppy disc in comp And click create you need your WinCD-Rom disc. then leave the disc in the comp and shut down to dos from the start button. Change the C:\Windows> to A:\ by typing
now just type Format C:
