how do i use recovery console

my computer won't start due to a corrupt file. i have inserted my windows xp installation disk and am trying to repair my original installation using recovery console. when i press "r" when promted i am asked which windows install i want to put on to but after i select it nothing seems to happen. any ideas what to do next will be greatly appreciated?

You don't use the Recovery Console to Repair XP..:-)

You would be better using sfc /scannow (note the space).

Type sfc /scannow into Run and click OK. This runs the Windows Files Protection service and checks and replaces missing or corrupt files.

You will probably need to have your XP disk handy.

Just noticed your computer "won't start".

In this case go into the Bios and configure to boot from CD.

With your XP disk in your drive exit and save the Bios change and then follow the guidance in the above link.

The thing to remember in a Repair XP is to keep requesting installation until you are given the choice of the Repair (NOT the Recovery Console).
