How do I transfer programmes/files to new PC

  fabrica 18:20 05 Jan 2008

My old PC is tired and I wish transfer some programmes and lots of files to my new PC.

1, How do I connect the two PC's together
2, How do I transfer the programmes.
3, Do I move files across to the new PC just by highlighting and copying or moving them in the usual way. I do not want to loose any data.

1). Cat 5 crossover cable
2). Use the Files and Settings transfer wizard (XP). I assume Vista has something similar
3). Use the Wizard

If your new PC has an IDE connection on the motherboard, install the old hard drive in the new computer, then drag and drop your files from the old drive to the new drive.

You can't copy installed programs accross, you'll have to reinstall those from their CDs or from their downloaded .exe files.

Files as others have suggested programs will have to be loaded via the disc's or downloaded.

Oops, yes, didn't read your question properly.

Programs will have to be installed from the original CDs or .exe files as MAJ says.

The Wizard is only good for files and PC settings, as the name suggests.
