How do I set up a home network in Windows?

  TOFF 19:54 07 Mar 2014

Hi I have a windows desktop which is connected to my router via an Ethernet cable. I also have a mac laptop, a windows laptop, a couple of iPads and iPhones all logging on to the internet wirelessly via the same router (not necessarily all at once). My desktop is Win 8.1 and the Win laptop has 7.

I have never knowingly networked them together but my desktop tells me that it is connected to ‘Network 4’ – whatever that is. The only details are an IP address. If I click on ‘homegroup’, it says that there is another one (my Win laptop?) and asks for a password to join it. Both Win machines have passwords for their respective homegroups but neither pwd works on the other machine. I think I should start again but how? BTW, I have bought a WD back up drive which connects to my router and is supposed to facilitate file sharing. Will this overcome all the other nonsense? I have not connected it yet in case it makes things worse. Any advice gratefully accepted.
