How do I optimize PC for gaming ?

I bought my son what I thought was a decent PC for gaming but he still claims he has to play some of his games on "lo-settings" in order for them to play without "lag".

I'm no gaming expert but I'm surprised the PC doesn't run these games pretty much on highest settings. Can somebody advise whether my expectations are wrong or whether there is something that can be done to improve performance ?

The spec of the PC is ....

Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 4.4GHz
4GB DDR Branded RAM
500GB SATA Hard Drive
Nvidia 9400GT 1024mb Graphics Card

Ask your son, I bet he has mates who can tell you what is required

I have ..... but he keeps asking me as though I've bought him a dud !!!

You have a powerful pc there, playing games should present no problems. Is your son playing online games? If so it is your connection speed that he is having problems with, you might check this.

How about trying your question on the games forum ?

Hi Paul33

What games is your son intending to play with that spec?

Don't know until he gets up in the morning but its mainly those war-sims where he commands armies in wars with others with nuking, explosions, etc, etc ..... and he's mainly playing single player rather than internet (we have 10mb broadband anyway).

Have you tried defragmenting the harddrive?

Won't make any difference. Unfortunately its all down to what games he plays and the hardware he has in his computer.

9400gt is not much good for gaming as it only has 16 cores. a 9800gt would be more like it as it has 112 cores.

What does that mean in layman's terms ?!!!
