Can anyone give me some guidance on how I can get some valuable vhs videos onto CD - granddaughters birth, sons wedding etc. I am running Windows 2000 pro, 128MB RAM and a 30 GB hard drive partitioned into 2 of 10 and 20 GB.

Belkin do a composite and S-VHS lead to usb with video capture software. It is available in PCWorld for circa £70.
Any recommendations for a firewire compatible device? I don't have a camcorder.
