How to copy one hard drive to another?

My laptop has a hard disk fault which although annoying does not stop it working. I have a new hard disk and would like to copy or ghost the whole of the old disk onto the new one. Old one had Windows ME, about 15Gb of data etc, new one has Windows XP loaded - will it be possible to transfer old to new with different versions of Windows? Is there any site on the internet I can upload the whole lot, swop drives and download again? I do have a 1Mb broadband connection.I understand it is normally simple on a PC as both disks can be connected on same system but cannot do this on a laptop. Any suggestions?

Connect the old drive in place of cdrom/cdrw/dvd and start the computer, you will see the drive and can then copy all of parts of it onto a folder on the new drive.
