How can Search Engines find info so quickly?

Has anyone wondered how popular search engines (like for example Google) can find information on the internet so quickly?
For example on most of my searches it only takes 0.24 seconds to come up with millions of results!
How does it accomplish this mammoth task so quickly?

Why did it take so long (0.24 seconds)?

You call 0.24 seconds slow?

Excellent Curlywurly, it's good to see someone asking these kind of questions, i have noticed that over the past few days you have posted a few general knowledge questions not related to a pc problem you may be having, i'm sure these questions are ones which everyone at one time or another has wondered about, just never thought about actually asking, it keeps forum members on their toes and blows the old cobwebs out. Keep em coming :-)

I don't understand your link!
Surely Google doesn't use REAL pigeons?
This is strange!

Thanks for your praises! (blushing)
The reason why I am asking these sorts of questions is that since buying a PC just over 2 years ago I not only want to do the normal everyday things but find out HOW and WHY they work!
For example a couple of years ago I knew NOTHING about the PC but now I can build my own from scratch and this has been achieved by learning HOW things work in this case the motherboard, BIOS, AGP, PCI, etc!
I will continue to ask unusual questions until no one answers and then I will stop as I will have realised that people are bored! lol
