How can I check what size Hard drive I should have

I might be being thick- but looking at reviews of my Compaq presario SR1729UK,(from 2006 when I bought it from PC world)they all mention the 300GB hard drive. However all I seem to have is 84.6Gb in C drive and 6GB in D drive. Does that make any sense? Could I have "lost" GB somewhere? Very confused now!

Something is certainly wrong here. You will have a restore partition (occupying the 6 odd gb) but i can't see where the rest of the drive space has gone.

Try this :

Open control panel and go to device manager

Then open administrative tools

Then storage

Disk drives

Check to see if you have any unallocated space, and post back.

crosstrainer

There is a partition called Acronis SZ which is FAT32. It says its an "unknown" partition and its 188.77GB! It says its "healthy". My C drive is NTFS.
So how can I get it back?

Good! We have found the missing space. Do you have an Acronis cd?

If so, you can safely re-size your windows partition....But take care.

Post back and I will give you a link to a free partition management tool...But these must be used with care!

See Here fro Acronis sz click here
I wonder if this pc belonged to someone else before you bought it, as NSTC is the norm these days.

  crosstrainer 08:46 27 Mar 2009

I was thinking similarly, Acronis SZ is actually a restore partition (Acronis safe zone)

I use an external usb hdd for my backups, so have no need of the FAT32 space... As you correctly point out, this could have been installed by a previous owner.

No I don't have any acronis software! How bizarre! Why would it need to be FAT32? I have just bought a western digital elements 1TB external drive.
So how on earth do I resize the partition?!

  crosstrainer 09:01 27 Mar 2009

Ok. Do you have a Windows Installation DVD?

If so, you will be safe in RESIZING the existin partiton using:

When you have downloaded, post back if you are in any way confused!!

  daveella123 09:04 27 Mar 2009

No I don't have a windows dvd in came preinstalled on the pc.

  crosstrainer 09:08 27 Mar 2009

Ok...Still not a problem, but sinch you do not use Acronis, you may as well proceed to re-size your partiton.

Download the tool in my previous link, install and then post back

IF YOU ARE IN ANWAY UNSURE

Post first :))

Also I would reformat to NSTC but maybe involve the seller.
