How can I access data from crashed laptop?

  y_not 19:25 15 May 2007

Hi & thanks for taking the time to read.
My daughter's Sony Vaio has finally given up the ghost and died.

I have taken the HDD from the laptop and placed it into my external (laptop) drive to allow me to recover the data, however she kept her files password protected (but never bothered to back the data up - in spite of my constant whining).
When I try to copy the folders I get the message "Access is denied".

I have the password but don't know when or where to use it as there seems to be no option for entering it.

Can anyone advise me on how I can move the data from the UBS caddy to a PC HDD, please?

Log on in safe mode (tap F8 after booting). If you're asked for the Administrator's password just press Enter.

Then copy from 'caddy' to PC.

Thanks for the advice.
I began by following VOG's link however when I tried to follow the information I found no tab for "Security" - I then followed a Microsoft link to explain how to disable "Simple file sharing" (I am using XP Pro on the PC) but found that there is no "Advanced" option.
I then tried BurrWalnut's suggestion and rebooting into safe mode, put a new folder onto the desktop to copy the data into but still recieved the "Access is denied" message.

Many thanks for your help so far can you offer any further assistance please?

Do you know whether the drive is formatted as NTFS or FAT32?

I am fairly sure it was NTFS
