Hotplugging VGA Monitor - Safe?

  woodface7 17:05 28 Oct 2007

We have an LCD panel with VGA socket used to view a PC and at other times a laptop, both running XP.

An easy to separate extension cable junction makes swapping between the two sources very simple, but we power-off the computers beforehand, concerned they or the unplugged monitor may be damaged.

Do we need to? I know office PC systems and gamers often have the ability to switch between monitors, but don't want to install special switches.

I've "hot-swapped" monitors for many years, with nary a problem.

That's not to say you mightn't get a problem if you were careless, of course.
