Homeplug? Help for computer novice please!

I've recently converted the attic into an office and so need internet access up there. I also use my laptop in the livingroom. At the moment I have Sky broadband with a wireless router in the livingroom which is great for the laptop but the signal in the attic is weak.
I've been told to get a home plug but I only have a very basic understanding of them.
I know they work through the electrical wiring so will it work if the upstairs plug sockets are on a different fuse to downstairs?
What would people recommend I get? (On a tight budget as Im a poor student!!)
Thanks.

I live in a quite large house and my home plug system works in any of the power sockets - upstairs, downstairs and in the separate garage. I think the requirement is to be on the same phase of the mains supply (which most houses are) and within a reasonable distance of each other (which is much larger than house size).

I have four plugs in regular use and they are far, far better than the wireless system that they replace.

Dead easy to install as well.
