Home page hijacked - About:Blank

  steved99 21:10 02 Aug 2005

I'm trying to sort out a neighbours computer whose homepage has been hijacked by About:Blank. I had a similar problem recently. I've run FxAgentB.exe and CWShredder (nothing found on either). Then I ran Ad-Aware-SE which found 195 critical object (all now quarantined). Finally, I've re-run Hijackthis but not sure what to delete (log attached below).

Computer has to be run in Safe Mode as on normal startup it takes ages to load and finally locks up. Its only a 733Mhz CPU with 64MB RAM and I think there are too many programs being started for it to cope with. 2 Questions:-
1) How do I reduce the number of programs loaded on startup?

2) Are the steps I've taken above to remove About:Blank valid if only running in Safe Mode? If not, how do I get round the problem?

Any help greatly appreciated. Hijackthis log details posted separately (I keep getting an error message when trying to post this so trying to do the log separately to see if it works):-

Download and run CWShredder. You may have been hijacked by a CoolWebSearch variant click here

That doesn't sound like a highjack. Someone has set the homepage to a "blank" page (about: blank)

Just change the homepage to whatever you wish (open IE and go to "Tools->Internet Options" and click onto the "HomePage" field and type in a website (incuding "http://" at the beginning of the address) )

As for the speed problem, have you/your friend defragged the system lately?

You won't be able to post the HJT log here because of the 800 word limit unless you spplit it into sections.

I suggest that you post it at this specialised forum click here
