Does anyone know a way of fixing the problem in XP when the task bar icons do not hide? I have tried editing the registry by deleting keys then rebooting and have tried sfc /scannow all to no avail, i have also run mailware and spyware programmes, the icons hide on one laptop and not on another the desktop does not have a problem either, all three machines are running the same version of xp and registry entries are identical for each of them.

Thanks for your post vog, have tried that one still the same.

That should have unhidden all of them. You will have to wait a while for the inactive ones to hide.

All the icons are unhidden, the problem is they do not hide when inactive.

It will take a while (a few hours) for the inactive ones to hide.

I assume that you have checked that "Hide inactive icons" is checked. Right click system tray and the choose properties - taskbar tab
