Hidden SSID - PC cannot connect

  Brighstone 23:40 24 Sep 2009

I've hidden the SSID on my router after first ensuring that my PC and wife's laptop have already previously connected wirelessly using the encryption key. After hiding the SSID, my wife's laptop is able to locate my wireless network and connect but my PC is unable to see the network. How do I overcome it's inability to see the network other than by going back to showing the SSID which is obviously not so good from a security point of view.

Check these setting on the wireless card and network connection

Right click on Wireless Icon in the task bar Click Status-General-Properties

Click – Wireless Network Tab – In the “Preferred Network” display box highlight your network

name and click Properties

Tick “ Connect even if this network is not broadcasting”

Click Connection Tab – Tick “ Connect when this network is in range”

Click OK - Click Advanced Button – Select “ Access Point (Infrastructure) Network Only

Click - Close

At the top of display the type of Wireless Card will be displayed

Click Configure-Click Advanced Tab

Check the following: -

‘Auto Connection Mode” is Enable

“Power Saving Mode” Set to Cam (Constantly Awake Mode)

Network Connection Setting

Click-Start- Setting-Network Connection-New Connection Wizard

Select-Connect to the Internet-Next

Select-Set Up My Connection Manually-Next

Select-Connect using a broadband connection that is always on

ambra 4 - many thanks for your advice - followed your instructions and great, problem solved. My PC can now find and automatically connect to the network even though the SSID is hidden but if I click on "View available wireless networks" my network isn't shown although on my wife's laptop it is shown. Is there any way I can make it be shown on my PC.

"View available wireless networks" my network isn't shown

Hideing the SSID being broadcast you should not see the network being listed in avilable

“Although on my wife's laptop it is shown”

Not to sure why it is being shown in your wife laptop avilable networks

See if your SSID network name is showing up on other wireless devices if you can

If the SSID is still showing up double check the router wireless setting
