Help - Windows XP Keeps Shutting Down

  Fastflys 20:08 10 May 2004

A friend of mine has a laptop with Win98 and XP loaded on a partitioned hard drive.

About 10 days ago he thinks his laptop was infected with the Sasser? virus. Since then he has found it impossible to boot up. Every time XP try’s to load it gets as far as the "Welcome Sreen", the opening jingle plays immediately followed by the closing jingle and the laptop shuts down.

Information given out by Microsoft and Symantec assumes that the computer boots up and you can access the desktop and “Start” button.

He has asked me if I can help him. I’m OK with the basics but no techie so in turn I’m asking if any of you can help me.

I’d welcome all suggestions but would ask that you please keep them simple.

Thanks in advance to any of you out there that responds to this post.

ask your friend to try safe mode

keep tapping F8 or F5 as soon as the computer is switched it from the list of options.

then follow the removal instructions

Thanks. I will pass your information onto him.

you/he may find it useful to print the removal instructions from the symantec site to use as a guide
