help trying to connect netgear usb adapter

please help
i have just purchased a netgear wg111v2 wireless usb adapter for my daughters laptop, and i am having problems i go through the installation procedure as asked but the adapter can not see my netgear wg834 wireless router, i have gone into my router set up and added the mac adress for the adapter as a user but no joy, i have tried this on two machines now my daughters laptop which is running win me and my own running win xp sp2 i have installed the driver etc at least twice on both machines, i know the router is working as my own pc is using a wg311 card which works fine
any help would be gratefully appreciated

First, be sure that wireless (or wireless networking) is enabled in your router - sometimes it is disabled by default.

Second, make sure that the DHCP server is enabled in the router and is issuing IP addresses in the correct range.

Third, ensure the pcs are set to obtain an IP address automatically.

See if it works now.
