I have some data on a spreadsheet that I want to sort by a certain column. The problem is the numbers in the column are abc1, abc2 etc right through to abc3000 and when I sort they sort abc1, abc10, abc100 then abc2 etc etc I want it to be in numerical order how do I do this please.

You will probably have to renumber them abc0001, abc0002, abc0010

I cant do that. They have to be as they are.

Unless someone knows better. I think your stuck.

Actually I wasn't going to use that last word but concluded that my first choice, although descriptive, was unacceptable.

will be along with an elegant solution, but if the format is as you describe with a fixed three letter prefix, you could use 'text to columns' to seperate the abc into one column and the numeric part into the next. Then sort by the numeric column. It's under 'data' 'text to columns', then choose the 'fixed width' option and click where you want to separate the column.
You could merge the columns after the sort process.
As I said it's not elegant but it works.

is perfect for the examples that you potsed. But are there always 3 letters in front of the number?
