Hi everyone,

I'm going to buy a DELL desktop, see specs below. Is it any good? Price is £369.

I have broadband with TELEWEST at home + a Buffalo Airstation wireless G.

Do I need to buy a modem or not? They give you 2 options of modems:

Dell™ v92 Data/Fax Modem without cable [add £23.50 or £1/month1]

Dell™ v92 Data/Fax Modem with cable [add £25.85 or £1/month1]

What's the with/without cable business, don't understand either?

The modems that they are offering are for dial-up!

You will need a BB modem.

But you will also need the dial-up modem if you want to send/receive faxes from the PC or make 'normal' voice calls via the PC (not VOIP calls)

So, I don't need to buy this Dell™ v92 Data/Fax Modem to connect to my TELEWEST broadband service.

I dont have a fax at home and unlikely to have one.

Sorry, I'm not that knowledgeable. What do you mean by voice calls and VOIP?

Thanks

If you don't require fax etc you don't need the Dell modems.

You do require a modem for your BB BUT didn't you get one when you subscribed?

You've got one!

Are you referring to the black box that I have at the moment that was supplied by TELEWEST?

The PC is very low spec.

You have onboard graphics and presumably on board sound and only 1GB RAM.

That will just about run Vista Basic - no more!

"I dont have a fax at home and unlikely to have one".

It's nothing to do with having a fax at home.

Dell PCs usually come pre-installed with software to enable you to send/receive faxes from the PC. It's a useful addition to have that facility.

As Pine Man says you should already have a BB modem supplied by your ISP which will connect to the new PC by USB.

I bought this a couple of months back, because my sister uses a laptop in her room so needed this wireless router business.

Yes that is your BB connection device.

If it has a lead just plug it into the ethernet connector on the PC if it's wireless only you will need a card for the PC to pick up the signal.
