hi, i don't know if this is directly responsible but i have just un-installed a demo of tom clancy's splinter cell, and now my desktop is at 16 bit. i have tried removing the graphics card from properties and reinstalling the drivers but to no avail. i have checked the settings and it states that i have 32 bit true colour. my comp has been quite stable for some time and i've forgotten what to do.

I've just had a similar problem: In a nutshell, whenever I forced Windows to re-install the driver it was installing a similar, but wrong, one and I was stuck with a 16-color lo-res display.

My son-in-law sorted it for me by going to the display adaptor details in Control Panel/System, and then browsing what drivers were available and highlighting the correct one.

Sorry I can't be more specific than that, but that forced Windows to load the correct driver, and everything has been okay since.
