I keep seeing this phrase: "thanks for the heads up".

What does heads up mean?

It just means thanks for letting me know.

Heads-up
A business buzzword meaning to give somebody a summary or progress report on the current situation.
Mainly used by idiots who want to be something they're not, ie successful businessmen.
"Let me give you a heads-up on the current state of play."

A heads-up display, or HUD, is any transparent display that presents data without obstructing the user's view. Although they were initially developed for military aviation, HUDs are now used in commercial aircraft, automobiles, and other applications.(Wikipedia)
Hence the relevance when someone pops up a piece of information which may be of interest to you on the forum.
