I have 2 Liteon cd re-writers on separate machines [98 & XP].Cds inserted in them auto play with Windows media player but there is no sound from the headphone sockets that each has.My headphones are ok.Any ideas please?

Is the volume control on the front of the drive turned up? It is usually a small horizontal wheel close to the headphone socket.

Yup! First thing I tried

Don't use headphones myself - and you don't say if these have worked before but I'm wondering if the phones you are trying to use are the correct impedence?

Omitted to say they did work before

Oh dear! What's the chances of two independent drive's sound failing at the same time?

Less chance than winning the lottery

Exactly - are you absolutely sure about the phones?

Just had a thought - 'omitted to say they did work before' - Before what?

Double checked them both with a portable player. both ok.

Both systems have recently been re-installed .
