Have you made the necessary changes to the display settings on the PC?

In the TV Options/Menu (or similar wording)there is usually a setting to select HDMI as the input. Otheroptions are Analogue, Digital and the like.

what settings do i need to change on my pc

You’ve ticked the topic as resolved, so I assume you’ve found the settings on the TV menu. You don’t have to change any computer settings.

Adding a second display, which you do by connecting to a TV, often requires changes in the Display settings on a desktop or pressing F5 or similar on a laptop.

I think you must have an early/oldish HDMI-enabled laptop. All I do is plug in the HDMI cable to both the laptop and the TV, turn on the TV, select Input Select and choose HDMI.

It was, of course, different with the older VGA D-pin connection.

Answer

The OP does not have an HDMI enabled laptop.

He has one with a DVI output and is using a DVI - HDMI lead to connect to a TV
