hdd missing

i have an acer aspire that has been causing me loads of trouble.
it started about two weeks ago i had a lot of trouble loading into windosw it would take about three or four attempt to get past the BSOD.
to day when i turned it on i got the error message
PXE-E61 media test failure check cable
no bootable device

so i tried to fix boot problems with the windows disk but no hdd shows up on the repair screen

i have removed the hdd and checked the connectors but every thing seems fine
any help please

I'm thinking here...........

You have a dodgy connection when you said you checked the connections you obviously plugged them in? Can you try and obtain a spare cable? Is it IDE or Sata?

Also check in the Bios to see if the HD is seen in Bios and make sure it's booting from the disk or so to speak.

it shows up in the Bios as first boot. no idea what if sata or ide it just slips on and off of the connectors in the laptop

Sounds rather like a faulty drive to me.
