HD Monitor sharpness

I have a 22" 1920*1080 LCD monitor running as the main display for my Acer laptop. I've just added a swicth which allow me to use it on an ancient IBM Thinkcentre. The results are quite dramatic, the 12 month old Acer laptop with integrated Intel HD graphics produces significantly lower sharpness than the old IBM with on-board Intel graphics (82865G set).

The images are the same size, the graphics report they are using the 1920*1080 setting, I exchanged panel leads and still the modern Intel chip set produces noticeably less sharp images. So can I improve the sharpness or am I stuck with what I have?

The switch doesn't appear to have degraded the picture in any way. The Acer is running W7 64 bit whilst the P4 HT powered IBM is running Vista 32 bit (just as fast as the laptop runs W7 as well!).

Any thoughts?
