HardDrive Empty-Could Be Serious-Help!!!

  Steve-234439 20:22 26 Jan 2005

My brother-in-law has just called me to say his hard drive is 'empty'.
Last weekend when he switched his pc on it started making clicking noises then died.
When he switched it back on it asked for the boot disk in drive A.
He has since took the pc to PC World who have hooked it upto another 'ghost' pc and have confirmed the hard drive is 'empty'. They advised him to get in contact with a 'data recovery' company for assistance (he knows very little about pc's and would like to know if there are any other anvenues for him).
He knows this may or may not work and could also cost alot of money, but as he's got most of his family photo's etc on the pc he's getting desperate (hasn't done a back up recently)!!!

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions (apart from backup more oftern) as to the next step for him to take.

Thanks In Advance.

Try Drive Rescue click here

You will need to run it off a different drive (e.g. a floppy).

wow, that's a strange one!!

by the sound of it, it may need to go a specialist shop, especially if he knows very little about PC's

Hi, sorry I can't offer any remedies, just wanted to say that data recovery as stated, does start at about £300 or maybe even more :-(

Thanks for your quick replies. I've downloaded 'Drive Resuce' onto my pc for him, but how would we run this for his pc if he can't get the thing 'booted' up?

You will need to install it as a slave drive in your PC click here

VoG - Thanks, I checked out the instructions and might give it a try. However we are both novices at computing so it might be a bit too much for us!!!
