hi i of my pcs is a e-machine i know the reputation but i have never had any trouble with it but now i changed the 40gig harddrive for a 160 set it as master and everything was fine the last 6/7 weeks now i am getting event error about standard controller or disk, as the disk is new and been checked it looks like the controller or cable i changed from dma to pio and that took the error away but the pc loads very slow i looked at the old harddisk i took out and it was set for cable select do i need to set the new one to that setting thanks Chippy

Setting the drive to PIO will really slow your PC down as it is very CPU intensive. Go back to DMA. Shouldn't matter if it is Master or CS if that is the only drive that you have on the cable.
Re-check your cable at both ends, change the cable if you can.
