I have a external HD that has stopped working, as in it wont let me in. It reports there is a fault with start up within the boot up of the 2TB HD.
Is there anyway I can retrieve the data within before re formatting.... please help.

What is the exact message?
Testdisk is something that will retrieve data but not easy to use tutorial
Please tell us the exact message you get - word for word - and the make and model of the external HD
also need to know what OS you have and if W7 if you have admin rights.

Ihave windoes 8 and the make of the HD is Maxtor... its about 12 months old too..... does that help
Perhaps you may be lucky and check disk will cure it
open a command prompt see how here
at the c:\windows prompt type E: chkdsk /f /r
when check disk has finished seee if you can explore your drive.
have you run check disk on it yet?
