Hard Drive partitions

I had problems with my hard drive and the disk was reformatted with C: 40gb NTFS. I have since took 8gb NTFS out of this for my documents and files. I have been told I should have a small FAT32 drive as well. If so what is it for and what do I put on it. I am running XP home

Are you saying that you are only using 8gb of a 40gb drive, or you have split a existing partition into 2 parts.

Split a 40gb drive into 32gb and 8gb. Using the 8gb for documents and mp3 files
