Hard drive no longer there

  Eileanbeag 11:59 05 May 2015

Following adding Skype to Windows Vista my friend's webcam updated its drivers. During the updating everything froze. She turned the computer off then back on and found that the hard drive was no longer recognized and it was trying to boot to the DVD drive. Any help you can give with this would be very much appreciated.

Open up computer and disconnect hard drive, then reconnect it and same at other end of cable. Boot and watch start up screen to see if hard drive recognised.

If not recognised it would suggest a hard drive failure.

Thanks - Hard drive does not show at start up and when she clicks on choose boot option the only option is CD/dvd. She tyried to reinstall windows from the recovery disc and the message was that there was no C drive.

When you say "She turned the computer off then back on". Do you think that she means that she turned the "Power Supply" off and then back on?

One of the potential risks of a Power Cut (or turning the Power Supply off) is for the HD's Reading Heads to crash. This is very likely what has happened. I hope that she has some form of external backup.

Desktop or laaptop? (suspect desktop)

BIOS is not seeing the drive -

loose connections - uplug and replug the sata and power cables at rear of drive and on the motherboard, retry to boot.

bad cable swap the data and or power connection with another (those to the DVD), retry to boot.

bad sata port - try in connecting to a different sata port on the motherboard

bad drive - this will probably mean a new drive and a reinstalltion of windows from your recovery media

She didf turn power off as nothi8ng else would work. Following this the hard drive disappeared. She has back up but it wants to reinstall to hard drive and that's not there.
