If a hard drive is taken from one pc and fitted straight into another, will it work without making any adjustments and will the operating system and user accounts still be there?

Everything on the hard drive will still be there - but, it will not work just 'as-is' ....... mobo CMOS being main difference.

Can you please elaborate?

In simple terms, when your OS is installed on a PC it configures itself for the hardware of that PC. So just taking the HDD and putting in another PC will be problematical as the OS won't be configured for that PC.

I would back the hardrive 1st onto an external drive or another drive and then test it. If your using acronis it will work, but if you dont use acronis it wont work, you could have to reformat the drive and possibly format using operating system

sometimes if you buy an hard disc enclosure should also help by keeping the files intact.
