Hard drive backup

Hello forum,

I have today acquired a nice large external hard drive the same size as my internal hdd.

Basically, I want to use this ext hdd to keep a complete backup of my entire internal hdd. Including documents, operating system, etc.

Is it possible to make a backup of my int hdd that would allow me to reinstall windows, documents, etc identically if my internal hard drive went !splat!

If so, what is the best method?

Just to let you know...

The internal HDD is not partitioned or anything like that and is running Windows XP home.
