hard drive

hi all my laptop hard drive recently packed up got one from fair today and a 2.5 inch caddy to transfer data my problem is the damaged hard drive has no file system and because of this i can not get the data off any help much appreciated

Seems like the hdd in the laptop has to be replaced internaly and put the old hdd in the caddy in the hope that you can retrieve any data. By simply putting a new hdd in a caddy will not work as the bios will automatically look for the os on the defunct internal drive.
Is the new drive formatted and have an os?

hi i have put new hard drive in laptop and installed xp i have put the old hard drive in the caddy it shows up as drive d but when i click it it says this drive is not formatted the drive is 35gb full i dont understand how i get access to my data

The reasons you bought a replacement drive and the laptop's denial there is any data on the old drive are the same.....

To put it brutally the old drive doesn't work!

There may be some hope, since it appears to be running that the old HD will give up some data to specialised software.

It all depends on how defective the old HD really is.
A scrambled file alloction table is one thing but serious defects on the disk's surface quite another
