i have a 40gb 4200rpm hard drive in my laptop, im going to upgrade itto another hard drive thats has 5400rpm, will this increase my systems speed

you won't ever ever notice it. Is the new drive bigger capacity?

faster means noisier and uses more power too.

Probably, since the "search time" of the new drive will be a bit lower than the old one. However, I imagine the difference in speed will be so small as to be hardly noticeable.

The biggest difference you would be likely to get would be by adding more RAM.

The reason I asked was the new drive bigger was because that is THE ONLY reason I'd change drives.

The 25% increase in rpm is not important here especially as the new drive is 50% bigger.
