Hard-disk failure

My mate has just had a new hard-disk fitted in his machine by a local specialist. He was unable to boot to his old-disk afer receiving the message 'Pri Master HDD Error' on startup. The specialist has said that no data is recoverable from the old disk. Does this seem right?

Thanks.

Not exactly, there are plenty of data recovery specialists, but you can expect to pay an arm and a leg.

That's what I thought too. Although I guess a lot depends on how badly the old hard-disk is damaged.
