Hard Disc Problems

I have two drives in my pc. A problem started when the slave disc (C) could not be seen for boot up and only drive D was seen. When I took out drive D and started up the PC, it first said that drive C still could not be seen and asked for a CD to boot from. When the CD was run it kicked drive C into action. If I restart the PC I have to go through the same proceedure and there is no way of running the PC with drive D on the ribbon. The jumpers are correct on both drives for until yesterday both drives were working perfectly. Is it a case of initialising drive C or is there another way out?

C:\ should be master not slave!
D:\ should be slave
Assuming operating system is installed on C:\
