Hangs on 'Setup is starting

  mak2 11:21 09 Jun 2004

My system crashed and I'm having problems restoring it. It won't start in safe mode either.

When I try to reinstall XP, it copies the setup files and then hangs.

Any suggestions please.

Anyone with any clues please

Try using a W98 or WME floppy in and on the promt choose without cd rom support on the A:\ promt type FDISK and delete the none dos partition and reinstall WXP this will format and partition so you don't have todo that,if you have the six XP floppy disks all the better if not you will have to set first boot cd in the bios.
REMEMBER ALL DATA WILL BE LOST so you will need your graphics drivers and audio drivers for starters.

I've tried installing XP onto a completely new drive from the cd, but it still hangs on the same point

Sounds like a dodgy CD - have you tried cleaning it?

I would remove all hardware that is not needed until you get XP loaded. That means usb also Sound cards and any other you do not need it may be having probs looking for drivers

Have you checked in the bios that the bios virus protection is switched off.

How many sticks of ram do you have in the machine. If more than one try with just one and rotate them.

It has caught me out more than once. :-(

Sorry I forgot to mention this is a dell laptop.
I've checked the bios for virus protection, it doesn't seem to be an option. Tried another CD as well.
