Hang on SP 2 restart

  lightfeet 00:33 16 Jan 2007

Following a failure of my hard drive I installed a replacement drive & reloaded XP. On reinstalling SP 2 when it tryed restart to complete the installation the computer hung, displaying a strange pattern on the screen.
MS site has a fix, KB885626, for something similar for a computer using a Pentium 4 or Celeron D with out-of-date BIOS version which doesn’t apply to me as I am running an AMD Athlone XP 1900+ with an Asus A7V266-E motherboard. Prior to the Hard Drive failure XP with SP 2 worked perfectly & I had no problem installing it initially

(the following was inadvertantly left off the above message) Can anyone suggest what would cause this problem please

Repair XP by install over the top of existing systm

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Thanks Fruit Bat, I have done as you suggested but without total success. It still freezes with SP2 installed when logging on to XP but now I can log on using safe mode which I couldn't do before, & remove SP2. Without SP2 I can now log on to the basic Windows in the normal way.

I had another fault on this computer & that was scrolling dots on the screen for which I had posted a request for help at click here I have now replaced the Graphics Card to cure the dot problem which had the effect of allowing me to update to SP2. It seems the faulty Graphics Card was the cause of all the problems on my computer which is now working fine. I should add that the POST on logon never showed a problem with the card.
Thanks Fruit Bat for your help. At one stage I was close to giving up & it was the fact that should I run into difficulties there was always someone on this Forum ready to help that kept me going.
